Murcia prostheses scandal prompts PSOE to demand full audit

Spain's Socialist Party (PSOE) has called for an independent, comprehensive audit of all prosthetic devices implanted in hospitals across the Region of Murcia, covering both public and privately‑run facilities. Party vice‑spokesperson Marisol Sánchez criticised the regional government's lack of transparency, saying the administration has hidden the true scale of the issue and failed to protect patients.

Sánchez alleged that expired and non‑certified prostheses were used, endangering health for profit, and noted that only a small portion of surgeries performed by a investigated surgeon at a single private centre had been reviewed. Evidence suggests the problem may extend to up to five hospitals in the region, leaving thousands of Murcian patients uncertain about whether they received unsafe implants. Alerts from health‑service technicians, warnings from the Court of Auditors about over‑pricing and irregular contracts, and a UDEF report highlighting a 15‑year lapse in controls were also cited as evidence of systemic failures.
