Murcia tourism sector adapts to heat with new hotel expansions

The tourism sector in Murcia is implementing new strategies to combat the impact of extreme summer temperatures. Bartolomé Vera, president of the tourism association Hoy Tú, noted that heatwaves have forced businesses to prioritize air conditioning and the adaptation of outdoor spaces to prevent revenue losses in establishments that rely heavily on terraces.

To meet the rising demand from international tourists, the region is planning the opening of 16 new hotels across nine municipalities, which will add over 700 beds. Vera emphasized the need for further development in coastal areas such as San Pedro del Pinatar, Mazarrón, and Águilas, as well as inland locations like Lorca and Caravaca de la Cruz, to bolster cultural and religious tourism. It is estimated that approximately 5,000 additional hotel beds will be required over the next five years.
