Murcia wastewater plants exceed EU renewable energy targets
Wastewater treatment plants managed by ESAMUR in the Murcia Region are now generating 22.5% of their total electricity consumption through renewable energy. This figure exceeds the European Union's 2030 target of 20%.
According to regional Minister Joaquín Buendía, this energy autonomy is achieved through biogas production during purification processes and the installation of solar photovoltaic systems. The strategy aims to reduce energy dependency and prepare for stricter EU environmental and efficiency regulations.
The regional government is also focusing on improving regenerated water quality through advanced quaternary treatments in nine facilities and utilizing the REGEN-IA artificial intelligence platform to optimize water resource management.
