Italian journalist Luca Esposito murdered; Tunisian suspect confesses
Luigi “Luca” Esposito, a 53‑year‑old sports journalist from Salerno, was found dead and burned in an agricultural field near Cioffi in the Eboli area on the night of 18‑19 July 2026. Police identified 26‑year‑old Tunisian irregular immigrant Ridha Rahmouni as the suspect after a manhunt that ended in an abandoned farmhouse where he barricaded himself. Rahmouni was arrested, his DNA matched a fingerprint on the victim’s car trunk, and investigators retrieved Esposito’s mobile phone, credit‑card and a white‑gold ring from the house. Phone‑record analysis and CCTV placed both men together on the night of the killing. During interrogation Rahmouni confessed to beating Esposito and setting his body on fire while it was still alive, citing the victim’s unwanted sexual advances and, in later statements, invoking his Muslim faith as a motive. A hearing to validate Rahmouni’s detention is scheduled for the next day. Esposito’s family, represented by lawyer Annalisa Califano, has thanked the Salerno prosecutor’s office and called for the continuation of the investigation. Politician Matteo Salvini publicly demanded the suspect be sent back to his home country.
