Murdoch Children's Research Institute develops stem cell-derived heart valve tissue
Researchers at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) in Australia have successfully grown human heart valve tissues from stem cells in a laboratory setting. The study, published in the journal Cell Stem Cell, produced tissues that closely mimic the biological characteristics of natural human heart valves.
This breakthrough offers a new platform for advancing regenerative medicine, potentially allowing for the development of replacement valves that can grow and adapt alongside pediatric patients. Currently, heart valve disease affects approximately 28 million people globally, and existing treatments are largely limited to surgical replacements which carry risks such as blood clots.
Additionally, the research platform can be used to model inflammatory valve diseases, including a precursor to rheumatic heart disease (RHD). This capability is particularly significant for studying RHD, which disproportionately affects Indigenous populations in Australia.
