Murofushi family lights Asiad 20 torch
At the Asiad 20 opening ceremony, Shigenobu Murofushi and his son Koji Murofushi performed the torch lighting. The father and son are legendary figures in Asian hammer throw, having collectively won seven Asiad gold medals.
Shigenobu, nicknamed ‘Asia’s Iron Man’ by the Japanese Olympic Committee, won five consecutive Asiad gold medals between 1970 and 1986. He was known for his technical discipline, using 8mm film to analyze his movements, a method he later shared with his son.
Additionally, the Asiad 20 mascot, Honohon, has gained significant popularity. The name Honohon means ‘rising flame’ in Japanese. The character combines the concept of athletic passion with the Sachihoko, a legendary protector deity of the Aichi-Nagoya region. Its design features red eyeliner inspired by traditional Kabuki Kumadori makeup, symbolizing passion and justice.
