Murueta City Council proposes reclassifying Astilleros Murueta land as natural area

The Murueta City Council has proposed reclassifying the industrial land currently occupied by Astilleros Murueta as a natural area. This proposal is included in the advance of the municipality's new general urban planning plan.

Legal experts have described the move as “muy inusual” (very unusual), noting that changing urban land to rural use prevents any urban development and reduces the land's value for potential sale. This shift follows the cancellation of the Guggenheim Museum project in Urdaibai, which had been planned for this site.

The change in direction is linked to leadership transitions within the PNV party and a desire to move away from the controversial urban development project associated with the shipyard, which is located within a biosphere reserve.
