Murumendi Trail Revival Highlights History and Sport in Gipuzkoa, Spain

The Murumendi route in the Goierri area of Gipuzkoa covers 15.92 km with a positive elevation gain of 796 m. Runners can complete the course in about 2 hours and 30 minutes, while walkers take roughly 3 hours and 45 minutes; a family-friendly option adds 40 minutes for children.

The trail starts in Beasain, the historic centre of the Ehunmilak ultra‑distance race that has long been a source of local pride and international recognition. Although the original event is no longer held, its spirit endures, and the Marimurumendi Marathon is scheduled to return next year, using part of the same path.

Along the way, the route passes historic landmarks such as the strategic hill of Usurbe, ancient pasture routes, and old boundary stones, linking the landscape’s natural beauty with its cultural memory. Photographs by Gonzalo Pérez Zunzunegui capture panoramic views of the green mosaic of villages and roads that define the region.
