Musa Kekana alleges police torture during 2024 arrest
Musa Kekana, an accused in an attempted-murder trial involving alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, has testified before the Johannesburg High Court regarding allegations of police brutality during his April 2024 arrest.
During a trial-within-a-trial focused on the admissibility of evidence, Kekana claimed that officers entered his property without permission and subjected him to torture to extract information about firearms. He testified that he was punched, tied up with his own belt, and repeatedly suffocated with a plastic bag until he lost consciousness and coughed up blood.
The State has challenged these claims, questioning whether Kekana’s physical condition was caused by police assault or a pre-existing medical condition. Kekana disputed medical records regarding his health history, stating he only described himself as sickly to avoid further violence from officers.
