Muscle health and nutritional guidelines redefine aging research
Recent scientific reviews are shifting the focus of healthy aging from body weight and BMI toward muscle health and functional capacity. A review published in Nature Metabolism suggests that muscle tissue is a dynamic component of metabolism, energy production, and the body's ability to respond to physiological challenges. Researchers propose seven biological pillars of skeletal muscle health, including metabolism, protein balance, and genetic function, emphasizing that maintaining strength and mobility is more critical for independence than simple weight management.
In the realm of supplementation, new evidence challenges the use of omega-3 for preventing dementia in cognitively healthy older adults. Clinical trials and reviews from organizations such as Cochrane and the US Preventive Services Task Force indicate that omega-3 does not significantly reduce the incidence of cognitive decline in this demographic, though it remains effective for managing hypertriglyceridemia. Experts suggest that dementia prevention should instead focus on blood pressure control, glucose management, physical activity, diet, and sleep.
