Muscle nodules and their causes and treatments

Muscle nodules, often described by patients as hard or sensitive areas within the muscle, are frequently related to myofascial trigger points rather than actual physical lumps or lesions. These areas involve increased muscle tension and sensitivity to touch.

Causes for these nodules include excessive physical effort, repetitive movements, poor posture, stress, lack of conditioning, and remaining in the same position for long periods. The condition can affect both athletes experiencing sudden increases in training intensity and individuals with sedentary lifestyles.

Physiologically, these issues stem from excessive muscle contraction involving proteins like actin and myosin. This can lead to local changes in metabolism and circulation, creating a cycle of pain, tension, and reduced movement that may require physical therapy for proper management.
