Muscle tissue grafts mimic exercise effects in mice
Researchers from the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have developed a muscle tissue graft that mimics the systemic effects of physical exercise in mice. The study, published in Nature Aging, describes how scientists cultivated muscle precursor cells from a mouse's quadriceps and implanted them under the skin.
The implanted tissue formed an organized, vascularized structure that contracted spontaneously and continuously. Over several months, the graft led to significant physical and metabolic improvements in elderly mice, including increased lean muscle mass, improved grip strength, and longer running endurance. Additionally, fifteen weeks after the transplant, the mice exhibited higher bone density.
This advancement offers a potential therapeutic pathway for treating age-related muscle loss in individuals who are unable to perform physical exercise, such as the elderly or those with limited mobility due to illness.
