Musée d'Orsay opens major Mary Cassatt retrospective
The Musée d'Orsay has launched a major retrospective titled ‘Mary Cassatt, l'indépendante’ to commemorate the centenary of the American Impressionist's death. The exhibition, running from October 6, 2026, to January 31, 2027, features approximately 80 works, including paintings, pastels, and graphics, many of which are rarely exhibited in Europe.
Mary Cassatt, a central figure in the Impressionist movement alongside artists like Claude Monet and Edgar Degas, is celebrated for her artistic autonomy and her depictions of women and mother-child relationships. The exhibition also includes a digital recreation of her monumental mural, ‘Modern Woman,’ originally created for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
Following its stay in Paris, the exhibition is scheduled to travel to the National Portrait Gallery in London from March 11 to June 13, 2027, and to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from July 17 to November 28, 2027. Additionally, the Art Institute of Chicago is hosting ‘Mary Cassatt: After Impressionism,’ featuring 75 works from her later career.
