Musée du Louvre hosts exhibition of Spanish painter Zurbarán
The Musée du Louvre is hosting a major exhibition dedicated to the Spanish Golden Age painter Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664), running from October 7, 2026, until January 25, 2027. The collection features approximately sixty works, including his monumental ‘Christ on the Cross,’ which he painted at age 19 for a Dominican convent in Seville.
The exhibition highlights the artist's versatility, moving beyond his reputation for austere religious figures and still lifes to showcase his skill as a successful entrepreneur who exported works to the Americas. Key pieces on display include ‘Saint Serapion,’ noted for its dramatic use of light and shadow, and various depictions of saints and martyrs that reflect the intense religious renewal of 17th-century Seville.
