Museo Accascina: Thieves steal artworks in Messina

Two thieves targeted the Museo Accascina in Messina, Italy, during the evening of August 15. The perpetrators entered through a secondary entrance after a contact alarm on the door was found to be deactivated. However, the internal volumetric detection system was operational and triggered an alarm as soon as the door was forced open.

Despite the alarm, the thieves proceeded to steal two specific items: the 'Tavoletta bifronte' and the 'Polittico di San Gregorio'. The thieves broke the display case to seize the bifronted tablet and removed the polyptych from its chapel setting. The theft occurred during a local religious festival, which resulted in fewer people being present in the surrounding streets.
