Museo Civico di Niscemi implements new accessibility features

The Museo Civico di Niscemi, located in a former Franciscan monastery in Sicily, has implemented the ‘Vivere le radici’ project to enhance accessibility for visitors with visual impairments or cognitive disabilities. Through collaboration with scientific partners, the museum has introduced tactile maps, Braille guides, and a dedicated mobile application featuring geolocated audio descriptions. These technological advancements aim to create a multisensory experience, particularly within the museum’s ethno-anthropological and natural history sections.

Beyond its role as a cultural center, the museum has served as a temporary safeguard for local heritage. Following hydrogeological issues in the area, the museum collaborated with the Soprintendenza dei Beni Culturali di Caltanissetta to provide secure storage for artworks moved from local religious buildings to prevent damage.

Additionally, the museum is hosting the contemporary art exhibition ‘D/SEGNI – Appunti del molteplice,’ supported by Fondazione Sicilia, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the city of Niscemi. The exhibition features works from sixteen Sicilian artists, including painters, sculptors, and photographers.
