Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao reopens after major expansion
The Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao has officially reopened following a major expansion project that took over four years to complete. The architectural renovation, designed by Norman Foster and Luis María Uriarte, introduces a new spatial dimension to the institution, aiming to transform the relationship between the museum and the city.
The inaugural ceremony featured performances by the Kukaihanda dance group and was attended by over 700 guests, including cultural, social, and political figures such as Lehendakari Imanol Pradales and Bilbao Mayor Juan Mari Aburto. To celebrate the reopening, the museum is offering a week of free admission to the public.
As part of the museum's renewed era, a significant collection of approximately one hundred works titled ‘La búsqueda del comienzo’ has been made available through the generosity of the late businessman Plácido Arango. This collection includes the notable sculpture ‘Bilbao’ by Richard Serra. The piece, originally created for a 1983 exhibition, returns to the museum after being held in Arango’s private collection.
