Museo del Prado deposits first artwork in Gandia

The Museo del Prado has deposited its first artwork in Gandia, marking a historic milestone for the city. The piece, an oil painting on canvas titled ‘Sant Francesc de Borja’, was created around 1878 by Francisco Díaz Carreño, a disciple of Madrazo.

The portrait depicts Saint Francis Borgia, the fourth Duke of Gandia and former General of the Society of Jesus. While the work is a copy of an earlier depiction, it holds significant historical value for the region. The painting had previously been held in the Prado's storage facilities and was not part of the public exhibition.

Mayor José Manuel Prieto described the arrival of the painting as a historic day, noting that Gandia joins a very exclusive group of cities that host works on deposit from the national museum. The Gandia City Council covered the costs for the restoration, transport, and transfer of the piece. The artwork is now on display at the Museu Santa Clara.
