Museo del Prado identifies potential unknown Goya painting
A painting previously attributed to Francisco Bayeu, the brother-in-law and mentor of Francisco de Goya, has been identified as a previously unknown work by Goya himself. The piece, titled “El milagro de la aparición del eucaristo al San Pascual Bailón”, was purchased in 2018 by Barcelona gallerist Artur Ramon at a Madrid auction.
The Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Museo del Prado believe the work dates to approximately 1780. The re-discovery follows suspicions raised by Ramon during the Covid-19 lockdowns regarding the painting's quality. A full technical investigation is expected as part of the preparations for a major exhibition in 2028, which will mark the bicentenary of Goya's death.
In addition to this discovery, the Museo del Prado is hosting a seminar for young researchers to discuss new methodologies and perspectives regarding Goya's work, addressing long-standing academic paradoxes and ensuring scientific study remains central to his legacy.
