Museo del Prado uses AI to simulate eclipse lighting on masterpieces

The Museo Nacional del Prado has launched a digital project titled ‘El Prado a la luz del eclipse’ to coincide with the solar eclipse on August 12. The initiative uses artificial intelligence, digital creation techniques, and graphic intervention to simulate how light changes the perception of famous artworks.

Developed by the studio AMB Piensa, the project features a one-minute video that digitally alters the lighting of 11 masterpieces from the museum's collection. The selection includes works by Diego Velázquez, such as ‘Las meninas’ and ‘La fragua de Vulcano’, as well as pieces by Francisco de Goya, including ‘El quitasol’ and ‘La pradera de San Isidro’.

Other featured artists include Rubens, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Claudio de Lorena, Alberto Durero, Carlos de Haes, José Casado del Alisal, José de Ribera, and Corrado Giaquinto. The experiment aims to reflect on the fundamental role of light in the history of painting by showing how shifts in illumination affect landscapes, portraits, and mythological scenes.
