Lucca officials debate future of Museo del Risorgimento

The future of the Museo del Risorgimento in Lucca remains a subject of intense local debate following its closure and the uncertainty surrounding its permanent location. Currently, approximately 200 artifacts remain packaged, and parts of the exhibition are inaccessible.

Lucca’s culture assessor, Angela Mia Pisano, has expressed the municipality’s willingness to collaborate with the Province to find a definitive solution and a new home for the museum that allows for expanded exhibition space. Meanwhile, the President of the Province, Marcello Pierucci, has announced a plan to reopen the museum, initially on a reservation-only basis, and is seeking collaboration with the University of Pisa.

However, these announcements have faced criticism. Former mayor Giorgio Del Ghingaro has challenged the Province’s claims regarding the museum’s accessibility, pointing out contradictions between official statements and the museum’s actual operational status. Other local figures, including Serena Mammini, have raised concerns regarding the city’s ability to manage and prioritize its existing cultural heritage.
