Museu da Pessoa launches digital collection on amateur football history
The Museu da Pessoa has launched a digital video collection titled ‘Memórias do Futebol de Várzea’ at the Museu do Futebol in São Paulo. The project features the testimonies of 17 individuals, highlighting the diversity and resilience of amateur football in Brazil.
Curator and sports journalist José Trajano noted that the collection includes stories of pioneers, female players and coaches, and prolific scorers. The project emphasizes how amateur football maintains its identity despite significant challenges, particularly the loss of physical spaces due to real estate speculation and urban changes.
A notable example of this struggle is the demolition of Grêmio Esportivo Cruz da Esperança at Campo de Marte to make way for a park. Trajano expressed concern that the replacement of traditional grass fields with synthetic ones may strip the sport of its historical roots. Additionally, the collection highlights the importance of women's football, featuring accounts from figures like Soraia Marques Trindade, who advocates for greater recognition and adequate spaces for female athletes.
