Museum at Campbell River unveils Japanese Canadian history exhibit

The Museum at Campbell River has introduced five new interpretive panels documenting the history of Japanese Canadians on northern Vancouver Island. The exhibit focuses on the lives and contributions of these individuals in industries such as logging, fishing, and sawmills prior to their forced internment by the federal government in 1942.

Supported by the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society, the project utilized archival research, historical photographs, and personal stories to highlight communities in areas including Port Alice, Englewood, Telegraph Cove, and the Discovery Islands. The panels are installed near the museum’s outdoor Soyokaze boat exhibition and serve as an educational resource for the region’s coastal history.
