Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo hosts Taiwanese modern art exhibition

The large-scale exhibition ‘Synchronic Constellation: Cross-boundary Perspectives in Art’ opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, showcasing the cultural intersection between Taiwan and Japan during the Japanese colonial period. The exhibition features approximately 200 Taiwanese artifacts, 500 pieces of documentary material, and 100 Japanese works, spanning art, literature, film, music, drama, and dance.

Directed by Huang Ya-li, the exhibition uses the documentary ‘Sunday Walker’ as a starting point, focusing on the ‘Windmill Poetry Society,’ a 1930s modernist literary group in Tainan that introduced surrealism to Taiwan. The exhibition aims to foster a ‘synchronic dialogue’ between Taiwan and Japan, examining how historical and political structures influenced artistic creation during the era of modernization and colonial rule.

In addition to the main displays, the Taiwanese bedding brand Sleepy Tofu Japan is sponsoring a reading space titled ‘Sunday Reading Room with SLEEPY TOFU’ on the museum's second floor. This space features a curated selection of books related to Taiwanese life and culture, selected by Tai-Tai Books, providing a space for visitors to rest and reflect on the exhibition.
