Museum of Islamic Culture and Art Sarajevo to open in 2026
The Museum of Islamic Culture and Art Sarajevo is scheduled for its official opening on September 4, 2026, with public access beginning the following day. Founded by the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the museum is housed in the historic Gazi Husrev-beg tekke and the Kuršumlija medresa, both of which are national monuments.
The museum aims to collect, preserve, and present Islamic cultural heritage, specifically focusing on the authentic Bosnian experience of Islam shaped by centuries of life in Europe. Director Amir Sakić stated that the institution is unique because it presents indigenous Islamic culture that developed locally on European soil.
The permanent collection will feature various thematic areas, including Islamic art, architecture, spirituality, daily life, craftsmanship, and the culture of books. An additional exhibition, ‘Love for Books’, will be located in the Gazi Husrev-beg library.
