Mushroom foraging in Germany: Best regions and harvesting methods
As autumn weather encourages mushroom foraging, experts are highlighting both the best locations in Germany and the long-term ecological impacts of harvesting. Key regions for finding porcini, chanterelles, and bay boletes include the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg, the Ebersberger Forst and Alpine foothills in Bavaria, and the Grunewald area near Berlin.
In Bavaria, foragers are advised to be cautious in the Alpine foothills, where some species may face radioactive contamination, though porcini and chanterelles are generally considered safe. In Munich, services are available to test up to 250 grams of mushrooms for contamination free of charge.
A long-term study conducted in Switzerland, which monitored nearly 148,000 fruiting bodies across 582 species, has investigated whether cutting mushrooms or twisting them out of the ground makes a difference to biodiversity and mushroom populations over time.
