Mushroom foraging in Poland: edible species and safety warnings
Foragers in Poland can find several edible mushroom species in local parks, gardens, and near residential areas, reducing the need for deep forest excursions. Notable species include various types of honey fungus (Opieńki), such as the honey honey fungus, the dark honey fungus, and the ringless honey fungus. These typically appear in abundance during October and November. Additionally, the parasol mushroom (Czubajka kania) is noted for its nutty flavor and large size.
However, experts warn against collecting mushrooms that have been damaged by insects. During the summer, up to 90 percent of forest mushrooms may be infested with larvae from flies or beetles, such as wireworms. These insects create ecosystems within the mushroom tissue, and consuming damaged specimens can pose health risks. It is advised to inspect mushrooms on-site to prevent contaminated specimens from spoiling a larger harvest.
