Germany mushroom season depends on September rainfall

The 2026 mushroom foraging season in Germany is heavily dependent on upcoming weather conditions. Experts note that while the first signs of growth have appeared following recent rainfall, extreme drought has previously impacted the underground mycelium networks, which are essential for mushroom development.

In the Pfälzerwald region, expert Dietmar Theiss emphasizes that success depends on the combination of water and warmth. While some small mushrooms are emerging, the overall yield will be determined by whether September remains dry or receives sufficient rain. Similarly, in Amberg, experts are monitoring the situation, hoping that September rainfall can compensate for the recent lack of porcini and chanterelles.

Foragers are advised to follow the ‘Handstraußregel’ (hand-bouquet rule) of the Federal Nature Conservation Act, which allows for collecting small amounts of wild mushrooms for personal use in accessible areas. Experts recommend using breathable baskets rather than plastic bags to prevent spoilage and urge foragers to use identification apps only as a preliminary guide, emphasizing that professional verification is necessary to avoid health risks.
