Mushroom foraging season begins in Germany

The mushroom foraging season is underway in parts of Germany, prompting local experts to offer guidance on identification and safety. In Schwerin, the Nature Conservation Station in Zippendorf is hosting free consultation sessions on September 21, September 25, and October 10. Experts Elfi Hruby and Regina Schmid will assist foragers in distinguishing between edible, inedible, and poisonous species to prevent accidental poisoning.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the season is also active in regions such as the Harz, Fläming, and Dübener Heide. Martin Groß, chairman of the Saxony-Anhalt Mushroom Experts Association, noted that while a dry summer initially hindered growth, recent rainfall provides hope for a productive September and October. The foraging season typically runs from late April until the first frost in late November.
