Music and interactive tools improve well-being in dementia care
Sensory-oriented and playful methods, such as music and interactive projections like the ‘Tovertafel’, are increasingly used to support people living with dementia. These tools aim to reduce restlessness and improve quality of life rather than serving as medical replacements for therapy.
Experts recommend using familiar songs from a person's youth to trigger memories and brighten moods. To avoid sensory overload, the German Alzheimer Society and the Center for Quality in Care (ZQP) suggest short sessions of approximately 20 minutes instead of continuous background music.
Effective care involves tailoring activities to individual needs, avoiding performance pressure, and maintaining structured documentation. This documentation should include the activity chosen, the level of participation, any necessary adjustments, and the individual's future wishes.
