Music Industry Grapples with AI Opportunities and Legal Risks

Major record labels have shifted their view of artificial intelligence from a distant concept to a core commercial strategy. In filings since 2020, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music describe AI first as an emerging technology, then as a generational inflection point, citing lawsuits over training data, expanding risk disclosures, and launching initiatives such as UMG’s Music AI Incubator and WMG’s partnerships with generative‑AI engines. The companies stress both defensive measures against unlicensed use and offensive opportunities to monetize AI‑generated content.

In India, AI is being applied to music production and performance. Companies have revived legendary singer Mohammed Rafi’s voice with AI and formed the country’s first AI‑only rock band. Artists report lower production costs – roughly ₹10,000 for audio versus much higher traditional budgets – while noting that AI cannot replace the soul of live vocals or the nuanced sounds of traditional instruments. Musicians are experimenting with AI‑generated tracks, refining them, and debating the artistic and legal implications of the technology.
