Music industry launches initiative to combat AI streaming fraud

The global music industry has launched the Streaming Integrity Initiative (SII) to combat widespread streaming fraud driven by artificial intelligence. Led by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the initiative seeks to prevent the manipulation of digital play counts, which diverts royalties away from legitimate artists, songwriters, and labels.

Major industry players, including Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music, have joined the effort alongside various distributors such as FUGA, The Orchard, and Virgin Music Group. The initiative focuses on establishing baseline anti-fraud practices, such as verifying customer identities, vetting uploads for AI-related risks, and identifying AI-generated content that may infringe on rights related to voice or likeness.

Reports indicate the scale of the issue is significant; Deezer noted receiving approximately 75,000 AI-generated tracks daily, accounting for nearly 44% of its new uploads. While most major distributors have signed on, some significant players like DistroKid have not yet joined the initiative, despite reports suggesting a high volume of AI-generated music passes through their services.
