Music industry sees unexpected rise in CD sales amid physical media shifts

The music industry is seeing an unexpected resurgence in compact disc (CD) sales. According to the ‘Midyear Report 2026’ by Luminate, the CD market is currently growing nearly seven times faster than the vinyl market, reversing a 20-year trend of decline.

In the pop sector, the Spice Girls have released a commemorative box set to celebrate 30 years since their debut. The collection includes various remixes, demos, and B-sides, such as the spontaneous recording ‘Spice Invaders’. While some fans expressed disappointment regarding the lack of a concert tour announcement, the release has seen commercial success, with three versions of the box set selling out within 24 hours of launch.

This shift in consumer behavior raises questions regarding the future of audio hardware, specifically whether manufacturers will increase production of CD players and transports to meet the rising demand for physical media.
