Music residencies expand in Europe as artists concentrate shows in single cities

The music industry is seeing a shift toward concert residencies in Europe, a model traditionally associated with Las Vegas. Instead of touring through multiple cities, major artists are performing multiple shows in a single location over several weeks or months.

Madrid has become a prominent hub for this trend. Recent examples include Shakira performing a 12-concert residency at a temporary venue in Villaverde, Bad Bunny holding ten concerts at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, and Dani Martín performing at the Movistar Arena. International stars such as Adele, Céline Dion, and Ariana Grande have also utilized formats that concentrate multiple performances within single European cities.

While this model increases the number of available tickets and reduces operational costs for the industry by utilizing the same venue for longer periods, it presents challenges for consumers. Rubén Sánchez, Secretary General of FACUA, notes that the model “does not favor the audience.” He argues that concentrating shows in one city forces fans to incur significant additional expenses for travel, accommodation, and food, which would otherwise be distributed across various cities during a traditional tour.
