Music serves as a tool for emotional regulation and mental health

Clinical psychologist Larasati Margaretha Soetrisno explains that music serves as a vital tool for recognizing and expressing emotions, which is a fundamental component of maintaining mental health.

According to research from Chemnitz University of Technology, music functions psychologically to help individuals regulate mood, understand themselves, and feel connected to others. Lyrics, melodies, and instruments can represent complex feelings that are otherwise difficult for a person to articulate. Activities such as listening, singing, playing instruments, or songwriting can act as emotional outlets to relieve stress.

However, Soetrisno emphasizes that while music is an effective coping strategy, it is not a substitute for professional psychological help. Music may provide temporary relief and help a person endure difficult moments, but it does not necessarily resolve the underlying issues causing the distress.
