Music tourism and ‘gig-tripping’ drive hostel occupancy growth

A growing trend known as ‘gig-tripping’ is significantly impacting urban tourism and the hospitality sector, particularly among Generation Z. This phenomenon involves travelers organizing trips specifically around major musical events, festivals, or concert tours.

Data from the hostel chain Generator shows a direct correlation between major musical acts and increased accommodation demand in Spain. During the BTS ‘Arirang World Tour’, private room bookings at Generator Madrid rose by 40% compared to the previous year, while shared accommodation demand grew by 14%.

Similarly, the presence of Bad Bunny led to a 20% increase in private room reservations at Generator Barcelona. In Madrid, where the artist had ten scheduled dates, private room occupancy doubled, and shared accommodation bookings rose by 10%. This trend highlights how large-scale musical events are becoming a primary driver for destination choice, influencing transport, leisure, and urban lodging sectors.
