Musical anhedonia linked to reduced brain connectivity

Research conducted by the University of Barcelona and IDIBELL suggests that a phenomenon known as musical anhedonia, which affects between 3% and 5% of the healthy population, is linked to specific brain connectivity patterns.

In individuals with this condition, the communication between the auditory cortex, which processes sound characteristics, and the reward system, which manages pleasure, appears less intense. While these individuals can still experience pleasure from other stimuli, such as winning money, they do not derive the same emotional satisfaction from music.

A study involving 45 volunteers used functional magnetic resonance imaging to observe these mechanisms. The findings indicated reduced activity in the nucleus accumbens, a key brain structure involved in reward processing, when participants listened to musical fragments.
