Musical education initiatives expand in Brazil

Musical education initiatives are expanding in Brazil through new orchestral and community-based projects.

Casa de Vovó Dedé has established a Youth Symphony Orchestra, a project resulting from over two years of preparation. Led by artistic director Ewelter Rocha, the orchestra integrates students from various musical training courses, featuring strings, woodwinds, percussion, and brass. The ensemble will be conducted by Jonatas Souza, with its first joint rehearsal scheduled for October 24.

In Pernambuco, the Caravana Sinta o Som project is bringing the “Sinfonia dos Brinquedos” show to public schools in Pombos, Caruaru, Brejo da Madre de Deus, and Petrolina. Organized by the Instituto Brasileiro de Música e Educação (IBME), the initiative aims to provide approximately 800 students with musical experiences through workshops, traditional songs, and instrument construction. The project seeks to decentralize cultural policies and strengthen the link between artistic initiatives and municipal education networks.
