Musical traditions connect communities in the Netherlands

Musical traditions continue to foster community and international connections in the Netherlands. In Banholt and Terhorst, the Harmonie and Klaroenkorps Amicitia held their annual Kermiszondag procession on August 30, 2026. The event included a visit to the cemetery for a memorial service led by Chaplain Dassen, followed by a musical procession through the villages. While local officials like Deputy Mayor Jef Roijen emphasized the importance of maintaining these traditions, the association noted that public interest along the parade route has declined in recent years.

In Hoogezand-Sappemeer, a long-standing musical bond between the Netherlands and Ukraine will be celebrated on October 31, 2026. The Kyiv-based choirs Dzvinochok and Vognyk are scheduled to perform concerts at the Roman Catholic Church. This visit marks the 22nd time the Dzvinochok boys' choir has visited the municipality since 2002. Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the choir's composition has changed, as some members are unable to leave the country or are involved in national defense. The performances will feature Ukrainian church and folk music, performed alongside a large project choir from Hoogezand-Sappemeer led by conductor Wim van de Laar.
