Musicians honor Yoko Ono at Los Angeles tribute concert
Musicians gathered at The Broad museum in Los Angeles for ‘Yoko Only: A Night Celebrating the Music of Yoko Ono,’ a tribute event held in conjunction with the museum’s ‘Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind’ exhibition. The event featured a variety of indie and alternative artists performing covers of the 93-year-old icon’s avant-garde and feminist compositions.
Curated by Yuka Honda, the evening included a house band featuring members of Yo La Tengo and Wilco guitarist Nels Cline. Notable performances included Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney performing ‘No, No, No,’ Sylvan Esso covering ‘Walking on Thin Ice,’ and Rufus Wainwright singing ‘I’m Going Away Smiling.’ Other contributors included Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards, Satomi Matsuzaki of Deerhoof, and Ono’s granddaughter, Emi Helfrich.
