Musicians urge UK government to reject Rosebank oil field

More than 200 musical artists, including Thom Yorke, Massive Attack, Robert Smith, and Brian Eno, have signed an open letter urging the UK government to reject the development of the Rosebank oil field in the North Sea.

The letter, coordinated by the campaign organization Uplift and published by the climate charity EarthPercent, warns that the project will fail to improve UK energy security or lower energy bills, as the majority of the oil is intended for export. Signatories emphasized that continuing fossil fuel expansion accelerates climate chaos, noting that extreme heatwaves are already impacting health, education, and the economy.

In response to environmental concerns, the company behind the project, Adura, stated that the development would bring £10.8bn in investment and support 3,500 jobs at the peak of construction. Following the close of the government consultation, ministers are set to decide on the future of the Rosebank field and the Jackdaw gasfield.
