Musina drug raid: R600 million meth lab uncovered in Limpopo
South African authorities have dismantled a large-scale crystal methamphetamine manufacturing operation on a farm in Musina, Limpopo. The raid, conducted late on a Thursday, followed a two-month intensive investigation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in coordination with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other specialized agencies.
During the operation, police seized drugs and laboratory equipment with an estimated street value of 600 million rand (approximately US$37 million), along with an undisclosed amount of cash. Five suspects, aged between 20 and 47, were arrested. The group includes two Mexican, two Zimbabwean, and one Malawian national.
This incident marks the third clandestine drug laboratory shut down in Limpopo. The discovery has raised concerns regarding the influence of international criminal networks; the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime has noted that such labs in South Africa and Mozambique may indicate the expansion of Latin American cartels into the African continent.
