Muslim community protests proposed Uniform Civil Code in India

Protests and religious opposition are mounting against the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India. Demonstrators demanded that the state government engage in extensive consultation with all communities, including women's organizations, legal experts, and religious scholars, before implementing any changes. Following the assembly, protesters attempted to march toward the Legislative Assembly but were intercepted by police. A memorandum outlining their concerns was subsequently submitted to the Governor.

In Bhopal, Mufti Gufran expressed strong opposition to the UCC, stating that the Muslim community cannot accept any law that conflicts with Sharia principles. He criticized the inclusion of UCC supporters as chief guests at public religious or social events and raised questions regarding the role of the city's Shahar Qazi in addressing community concerns. These developments reflect ongoing tensions regarding the proposed legal framework intended to standardize marriage, divorce, and inheritance laws across the country.
