Mustafa Cambaz: The life and legacy of the journalist killed on July 15

The life and legacy of Mustafa Cambaz, a photojournalist who died during the July 15 coup attempt, has been featured in the television series ‘Asırlık Gece’.

Born in 1963 in Komotini, Western Thrace, Cambaz fled to Turkey to avoid mandatory military service in Greece, a decision that led to him being stripped of his Greek citizenship. He lived for many years with stateless status in Turkey before being granted citizenship posthumously.

As a photojournalist for Yeni Şafak and TVNET, Cambaz focused on documenting Turkey’s cultural and architectural heritage. He archived over 10,000 historical sites, including mosques, madrasas, and palaces, and authored the book ‘Türkiye Ulu Camileri’. On the night of the July 15 coup attempt, he joined the resistance in Çengelköy following the call from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and was killed by gunfire.
