Mustafa Tanrıverdi recounts experiences of the 1980 military coup

Mustafa Tanrıverdi, a victim of the September 12, 1980, military coup in Turkey, has shared his experiences regarding the detention and imprisonment of young people during that era. A former member of the Kozan Ülkücü Gençlik Derneği, Tanrıverdi detailed the psychological and physical hardships faced by detainees, including being blindfolded, having hair cut in a military style, and enduring verbal abuse and humiliation.

Tanrıverdi described the severe overcrowding in detention centers, noting that up to 30-40 people were often held in spaces where there was barely enough room to sit. He highlighted that individuals from opposing political backgrounds, such as members of Devrimci Kurtuluş, were held in the same cells and subjected to similar treatment.

During his time in prison, Tanrıverdi studied legal statutes to assist fellow inmates. He specifically worked on preparing defense petitions for prisoners facing the death penalty, including those involved in the Kahramanmaraş events, in an effort to save them from execution.
