Mutitjulu community to receive $122 million utilities upgrade
The Australian Federal Government has funded a $122 million utilities upgrade for the remote Mutitjulu community, located within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory. The project aims to modernize ageing power, water, and sewerage networks that serve Mutitjulu, Maruku, and Rangerville.
A key component of the initiative is the introduction of renewable energy infrastructure, including a 1 MW solar array and a 3 MWh battery energy storage system. This transition is intended to reduce the community's dependence on expensive diesel fuel and improve the reliability of essential services for the approximately 300 residents, including the Anangu people.
The contract has been awarded to South Australia-based Exact Contracting. Preparation works are expected to begin in late 2024 or October 2026, with full construction scheduled to commence in January, aiming for completion by late 2028. The project is also expected to provide training and employment opportunities for local community members.
