Mutotope residents report improved safety following new street lighting installation

Residents of the Mutotope area in the Muhala-Expansion zone of Nampula are reporting improved safety following the installation of new public street lighting. The project, implemented by Eletricidade de Moçambique (EDM), aims to enhance mobility and deter criminal activity during nighttime hours.

Prior to the installation, community members described a high level of insecurity. Residents reported that criminals frequently used the darkness to hide behind walls or in bushes to ambush pedestrians. Local accounts highlighted instances of violent assaults, including stabbings and beatings, which previously resulted in serious injuries and fatalities. The new lighting is expected to mitigate these risks and provide greater comfort for those traveling through the area at night.
