Mutuípe police investigate brandy consumption causing sensory loss

Two men, aged 29 and 42, experienced sudden sensory loss after consuming brandy in Mutuípe, Bahia. Approximately 40 minutes after ingestion, the 29-year-old suffered vision loss, while the 42-year-old experienced hearing impairment.

The victims were treated at the Mutuípe Hospital before being transferred to the Santo Antônio de Jesus Regional Hospital (HRSAJ), where they received detoxification medication. Both men were discharged on Wednesday.

While authorities initially investigated methanol contamination, the Bahia State Health Secretariat (Sesab) and the Mutuípe Municipal Health Secretariat have both officially ruled out methanol poisoning. The Civil Police are currently investigating the origin of the beverage and the circumstances surrounding its consumption. The men are expected to provide further statements and hand over the remaining bottle to investigators.
