MV Barima Commission of Inquiry begins proceedings and salvage planning
The Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the MV Barima tragedy has commenced its proceedings, with formal hearings scheduled to begin on October 14. The investigation aims to determine the causes of the vessel's sinking on July 18, which resulted in the deaths of 179 passengers and crew members.
As part of the investigation, BK International has been identified as the preferred bidder to conduct salvage operations to retrieve the vessel from the Atlantic seabed. Commissioner and Naval Architect Dr. Andrzej Jasionowski stated that negotiations are nearing completion and salvage efforts could begin as early as this month. The COI will oversee the recovery to ensure the preservation of forensic evidence, which investigators believe remains largely intact despite the vessel being submerged for nearly three months.
Before formal testimony begins, the Commission is conducting outreach sessions and site visits. This includes meeting with survivors and bereaved families in Georgetown, Mabaruma, and Port Kaituma, as well as inspecting maritime facilities and dry-dock sites. The Commission, led by Chairman Justice Godfrey Smith, has emphasized its commitment to an independent, evidence-driven probe. While over 100 witnesses, including first responders and officials, are expected to testify, the Commission is also providing support and interpreters for affected families during the outreach phase.
