Guyana Commission of Inquiry advances M/V BARIMA investigation

A Commission of Inquiry has been established in Guyana to investigate the capsizing and sinking of the M/V BARIMA, which occurred on the night of July 18, 2026. The inquiry aims to determine the sequence of events, identify the direct and systematic causes of the casualty, and assess compliance with legal and safety requirements.

The Commission’s mandate extends beyond a technical safety investigation to include public accountability, institutional performance, and necessary reforms to strengthen maritime safety. The inquiry will examine the response to the incident and recommend accountability where warranted.

Preparations for public hearings are underway at the Arthur Chung Conference Center. The Commission has already conducted a preliminary site survey, established a Secretariat, and begun acquiring data from institutions including the Guyana Coast Guard, the Air Guard, the Transport and Harbours Division, and MARAD. Investigators are currently analyzing documentation regarding the vessel’s seaworthiness and crew operations, while compiling a list of potential witnesses.
